Venues of the Architecture Biennale

The International Architecture Exhibition is hosted in the Central Pavilion at Giardini, where 29 pavilions of participating countries also stand, and in the Arsenale area (Corderie, Artiglierie, and Gaggiandre). The Giardini area is the historical site of the Biennale, whereas it was the Architecture section that reopened the Corderie in 1980 using the site as an exhibition venue, which in subsequent years was extended to further Arsenale areas. >>

History of the Architecture Biennale

The first exhibitions dedicated to architectural subjects were realized in the period 1975-1978 by the director of the Art section, Vittorio Gregotti. The Architecture section was established in 1980: director Paolo Portoghesi for the first time opened to visitors the Corderie dell'Arsenale venue, turning it into a “strada novissima”. The history of the Architecture Biennale has been continuing since then: in 2012 David Chipperfield directed the 13th edition of the exhibition.
