Monolith Controversies is the title of the third appointment with Freeport, the programme conceived as part of Monditalia exhibition. This seminar is organized by the Chile Pavilion (Silver Lion for National Participation), curated by Pedro Alonso and Hugo Palmarola, and it will take place at the Corderie in the Arsenale on July 31st 2014 on the stage E from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
A large concrete panel stands in the center of the Chilean Pavilion. This object was produced in 1972 by a factory known as KPD, donated by the Soviet Union to Chile for the prefabrication of panels in order to fulfill the social housing program that the Unidad Popular government was starting to implement. Ever since, this panel has been the subject of several political and ideological controversies, especially after President Salvador Allende autographed his name in the wet concrete, before the panel was placed at the factory’s entrance. It represents a marginal tradition in the history writings of modern architecture, but it’s still a breakthrough considering that more than 170 million apartments were built worldwide using these technologies between 1945 and 1985. The Chilean Pavilion tells the story of the panel from the standpoint of the figure who ended up replacing the architect as the central individual—and that is the anonymous worker. Starting from this, the seminar proposed for the Freeport aims at bringing together former KPD workers, the pavilion curators and professor Adrian Forty to have a conversation about a piece of concrete considered fundamental to the absorption of modernity, theme proposed as the concept for the 14th International Architecture Exhibition.
The Freeport program, conceived as part of the exhibition Monditalia, will allow National Participations to match their Pavilions’ presences with a series of live talks, debates and movie projections, in the Arsenale’s Corderie. Freeport animates the Arsenale on weekdays, as counterpart to the Weekend Specials program; both essential part of the Meetings on Architecture, organized by la Biennale di Venezia.
