The Film Library gathers the reels of films (fiction and documentaries), presented during the various international film festivals and other events or festivals held under the patronage of the Biennale di Venezia. The rooms are air-conditioned and hold only non-flammable film. The nitrate supports, because of their instability, are currently conserved at the Cineteca di Bologna, on the basis of an agreement stipulated in 1993.
The Biennale periodically organizes retrospectives and film forums using the films from its Film Library.
The Film Library currently contains 1,107 films, including full-length and short films. The formats include 35mm, 16mm, 70mm, black and white or color.
The material is completely inventoried and catalogued.
The Film Library provides the following research tools:
- a printed catalogue by author, by title, by subject (with reference to the catalogue by author and by title), by language;
- a digital data base with the possibility of browsing by fields.
It is responsible for the maintenance and restoration of the films, and for controlling the copies authorized for circulation; it also supervises the maintenance of film equipment. The laboratory is equipped with Telecinema to transfer film to videotapes.
