< Back
a very positive increase of the professionals attending the market
09 | 03 | 2013

the number of stands have almost doubled

The second edition of the Venice Film Market ran at the beginning of the Venice Film Festival, from Thursday 29, August to Tuesday 3, September, and was located in designated areas of the Excelsior Hotel on the Venice Lido. The Venice Film Market joined forces with the Industry Office which, as in previous years, continues to perform its functions during the entire duration of the Venice Film Festival, by offering many services to professionals, in collaboration with Expo Venice.

The 2013 edition of the VFM clearly shows a very positive increase of the professionals attending the market with 246 key distributors (The Weinstein Company, Artificial Eye, Hopscotch/Eone, Lumiere Publishing, Palace, Le Pacte, Concorde, Wild Bunch, Angel Films, Diaphana, Wanda Vision, MK2,  Pyramide) compare with the 193 of last year and 86 key sales agents (FilmNation, Hanway, Voltage, The Match Factory, Elle Driver, Films Distribution, Trustnordisk, Finecut, Fandango, Intramovies, IM Global, Wide Management, Fortissimo... ) (66 in 2012). In addition to them, 1400 professionals (1100 in 2012) including producers, film commissions and institutions, exhibitors, film festival etc, coming from 58 countries (62 last year) attended the Venice Film Market with a strong attendance from Italy (849) (797 in 2012), France ( 222) (117 in 2012), Germany (62) (55 in 2012), USA ( 61) (40 in 2012), UK  (60) (30 in 2012) and Russia ( 24) (21 in 2012)...

The number of stands have almost doubled from last year with the arrival of Cinema do Brasil, the Greek Film Center, Gran Canaria, the Polish Film Institute and Poland Film commission, Wallimage, Pinocchio Productions and the constant support of Roskino, ANICA, AGIS, ANEC, INCAA, Taipei Film Commission, Eurimage, the Israel Film Fund...

Most importantly, several films shown in the different sections of the festival were sold during the first four days of the Venice Film Market. Those deals were done by Hanway, FilmNation, Film Boutique, Pathé , The Match factory, The Weinstein Company, Elle Driver, Rezo, Swipe films, Film Factory, etc.

New initiatives were hosted by the VFM this year like FINAL CUT IN VENICE during which 4 African work-in-progress films have been shown to sales agents and technical industries which awarded Challat Tunes, Made in Madagascar – avec presque rien and The Cat representing a total grant worth €57,800.

The meeting between CICAE’s independent exhibitors and the sales agents has been very successful and so appreciated that we will repeate and expand it next year to a full day.

For the first time, 26 markets screenings were held in the Pasinetti theater and have fairly been attended.

27 panels and conferences were held during the 6 days of the market.

121 films were presented in the Digital Video Library (114 last year).  Of these, 70 titles were from the official selection of the festival. A total of 956 screenings up to last night (704 in 2012) by around 80 different distributors. The most often screened titles in the Video Library so far were: Amazonia, Via Castellana Bandiera, Piccola Patria, Yuri Esposito and Wolfskinder.

The general feedback from the industry is that this Market is the prefect place for networking, fits seamlessly with the programming of the festival and that Venice is once again becoming a rendez-vous to add on the professional agenda.
