The Second International Conference “Archives and Exhibitions” organized by la Biennale di Venezia – ASAC (Historical Archives of Contemporary Arts) chaired by Paolo Baratta will take place on Friday 15th and Saturday 16th November at the Teatro Piccolo Arsenale in Venice.

Conceived in the context of the 55th International Art ExhibitionIl Palazzo Enciclopedico (The Encyclopedic Palace) – curated by Massimiliano Gioni, the Conference is realized by the Historical Archives of Contemporary Arts of la Biennale with the collaboration of the Archive Superintendence for the Veneto Region.

You can't hold an exhibition, even dedicated to the avant-garde, without having recourse to the archives”: with these words Paolo Baratta inaugurated the First Conference “Archives and Exhibitions”, organised in the context of the 13th International Architecture Exhibition curated by David Chipperfield (October 20th and 21st, 2012).

“The archive became a ‘permanent theme’ for la Biennale – states Baratta – and becomes important for the contemporary: the relationship between archives and exhibitions evolves in our consideration of them as an extemporaneous topic until they become one of the themes of the holdings of an organization like la Biennale.”

“La Biennale is a place – says Baratta – where we can continue this discussion, because the historical archive is the place from which and to which the memories and documents of the past travel, but it is also the place for the archive of our future. This is a very serious responsibility that we need to include among the responsibilities of a cultural institution even if it is not written in its by-laws.”

The two days of debates are divided into 4 sessions that include institutional interventions and roundtable discussions.
- on Friday November 15th the President of la Biennale di Venezia, Paolo Baratta will open the works and present the Proceedings of the First International Conference “Archives and Exhibitions” 2012 published by la Biennale di Venezia (€ 10, view details).

This will be followed by the roundtable moderated by Angela Vettese, an art critic and councilor of Culture and Tourism of the Municipality of Venice: Massimiliano Gioni will describe The use of Archives in the 55th International Art Exhibition with two artists invited to the Biennale Arte 2013: Gianfranco Baruchello and Matt Mullican.

The second session –Organize the memory– taking place in the afternoon and moderated by Massimiliano Gioni, will see Angela Vettese in conversation with Eleni Michaelidi, archivist at DESTE Foundation in Athens and Reem Akl, project officer at the Arab Image Foundation in Beirut.

The great potential of the archives in Italy is the title of the third session, moderated by Erilde Terenzoni, archive superintendent for Veneto and Trentino-Alto Adige, that will engage scholars and representatives of the major Italian institutions: Diana Toccafondi, archive superintendent for Tuscany, Rachele Ferrario, professor of phenomenology of contemporary arts and archives cataloguing and management at Accademia di Belle Arti in Milan, Debora Rossi, head of ASAC - Historical Archives of Contemporary Arts in Venice, and Paola Pettenella, head of the historical archives at Mart in Rovereto.
Rossana Rummo, general director for Libraries, Cultural Institutes and Copyright of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism will draw the conclusions of the first day of Conference.

- on Saturday November 16th, Massimiliano Gioni will moderate the meeting dedicated to the role of the archive document in contemporary art, with talks by Paolo Baratta, Okwui Enwezor, director of Haus der Kunst in Munich, Michelle Elligott, director of the MoMA Archives in New York, Luca Massimo Barbero, director of the Institute of Art History of the Fondazione Cini in Venice, Daniela Lancioni, senior curator at Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome, and Assunta Porciani, head of the Archive and Library of Fondazione la Quadriennale in Rome.
