The Weekend Special titled European and Global Cultures / Perspectives on Architecture & (Creative) Economy, coordinated by the architectural theorist Stephan Trüby, will take place as part of Monditalia, at the Corderie of Arsenale, on July 26th and 27th 2014, Stage E.
During two days of debates, scholars and experts will take stock of globalization, which was spread from Europe and is now barely controlled by the “old continent”. Banking and finance are firmly in hands of the States, as are the digital revolution and its data records. Only Russia and China, with their seemingly unlimited access to raw materials and human resources, can somehow match the United States. It seems that in this context, Europe stands - besides some undisputed areas of high technology and the pharmaceutical industry - for refining the “old industries” in fields as machine and automobile construction for the luxury goods industry  and as the often not clearly defined creative industries. In times of crisis, with the construction sector almost coming to a complete standstill in southern European countries, from Portugal to Greece, Europe’s commonalities, which have grown over the past years, are retreating increasingly due to  aggressive re-nationalization tendencies, which emphasize different financial cultures. Which are the headway taken by architects and other creative artists? Is Europe still a possible reference frame for cultural practice? Or have we gone so global that such a practice is nothing but folklore? These questions stand at the heart of the two-day conference.
TheWeekendSpecials, as well asthe Freeportorganized by National Participations, will enriched this year Meetings on Architecture program organized by la Biennale di Venezia
