Synopsis

Pere Portabella was a great and highly original Spanish filmmaker. His films No compteu amb els dits, Nocturno 29 (Nocturne 29), Cuadecuc, vampir, Umbracle, Pont de Varsòvia (Warsaw Bridge), and Die Stille vor Bach (The Silence Before Bach), have been fundamental links of an alternative and influential film culture. As a producer, we owe him Marco Ferreri’s El cochecito and Buñuel’s Viridiana. Portabella has also been a relevant politician: he was elected senator in the Spanish Constituent Cortes and his signature is on the 1978 Spanish Constitution. Constel·lació Portabella is developed from fragments of his own films and debates, conferences and interviews with Portabella himself in different media throughout his career as a filmmaker and politician. Framing all this are twelve interviews with critics, directors, and film and art historians who have dealt with his work or participated in its creation. Thanks to them, we can penetrate into the challenges behind Portabella’s creative choices.

Director's statement

Pere Portabella’s work and life are so varied that to make a documentary about him is to go through the entire cultural and political history of Spain and Europe over the last seventy years. At times like the present, in which Europe is undergoing very serious tensions, both within each country and at its borders, it seems necessary to remember how previous generations fought. A history of cinema and the audiovisual image of the last decades also emerges throughout the documentary. Fragments of the filmmaker’s films, the abundant documentary material and interviews with experts and collaborators are interwoven in a more musical than literary, more heterogeneous than closed way, as is Portabella’s style. A style that has always boasted a masterful and imaginative blend of genres and sources.
