synopsis

Eyüp has gone bankrupt and now has to leave İzmir and return to Siverek. With the help of his friend Ali, he starts working in a field where he dries tomatoes with villagers under the scorching heat of the sun. Not being able to get his wage on time, Eyüp feels frustrated. That day things go as usual for others: Villagers continue working in the field as they joke with one another, while the foreman Hemme, having trouble sleeping because of the flies, seems anxious about not being able to get the job done on time. Eyüp reminds Hemme of the daily wage, but Hemme shakes him off. Eyüp feels angry and desperate. Hemme comes back wishing to cool things down but Eyüp stares at him angrily. Discomforted by the look in his eyes, Hemme insults Eyüp which makes him lose himself in return. Eyüp tries to attack Hemme but Ali and other workers intervene. Eyüp gets on his motorcycle and leaves the tomato field. The motorcycle breaks down twice on the road, and then Eyüp receives a call from his coworker Nevzat. He gets even angrier because of what he hears and decides to kill Hemme. Having realised that he cannot go back to the field with the broken motorcycle, he decides to go to town to borrow another one. But in town, he starts lingering around, anger and despair taking turns in his soul. As the sun goes down, his desire to kill Hemme is weakened as he has been diverted unknowingly by townspeople the entire day and could find time to contemplate what is around him, making his feelings cool down.

director's statement

Whose story should be told, that of a street insect, a tree, an old man walking around, a man talking incessantly, a baker, a greedy contractor or a red 1986 motorbike? I wanted to show an ordinary day in the life of Eyüp, a poor, unsuccessful city boy working under the boiling summer sun drying and salting tomatoes. A typical day of jokes and ordinary worries continues as Eyüp, angry at not getting his daily wage and deciding to kill Hemme, is constantly distracted with trivialities by unaware townspeople throughout the day. In this film, I especially tried to express that the dramatic, tragic and comic aspects of all human behaviour are actually trivial. In the end, we are all in a halay. Just like in Cemal Süreya’s famous poem, we are on a tram travelling from Laleli to the world.
