Throughout its 90 years of activity, the International Theatre Festival has always been able to renew itself and express the spirit of the times. It was one of the first Departments to be established (in 1934), and period photos tell us of memorable beginnings, with Max Reinhardt’s production of The Merchant of Venice staged in its titular city, in Campo San Trovaso. The city made a stage for itself, and under the Venetian sky its citizens became an audience.
Numbers, skies – when the outlook is the same in both, it’s always worth believing.

Pietrangelo Buttafuoco, President of La Biennale di Venezia

This Festival is a master key to open the doors of the Imagination and set sail on a multidisciplinary two-week journey (from 15 to 30 June 2024) across the Biennale Teatro’s theatres, venues and site-specific spaces. It will offer an experience of daring ethical and political scope and breathtaking aesthetics; explore unknown worlds; share utopian dreams and deep emotions.
With their creations, their exploratory practices and a corrosive vision for our times, an extraordinary line-up of poetic and visionary artists will come together to awaken consciences and delineate the contours of a more desirable future. They will open up unexplored universes, shake the horizons of humdrum expectation, and as they stun us with unforgettable performances so they will offer us a return ticket to an all-encompassing elsewhere.

Stefano Ricci  Gianni Forte, Artistic Directors of the Theatre Department
