L’Enkas
Synopsis
Fresh out of jail, Ulysse has only one idea in mind: making money. Confronted by his depressed mother, Gabrielle, the bills that never stop piling up and his desire to live his life to the full, he makes a plan. With his best friend, David, he travels from rave to rave, selling a mixture of water and Ketamine from their food truck. Together, they hit the road...
Director’s Statement
L’EnKas was born with Hamé and Ekoué. Twenty years ago, they created La Rumeur, a crucial French rap group. Their production company aims at reinterpreting “socially aware” cinema by giving a voice to ordinary people, who weren’t born bad but who have had to follow illegal paths. Together we tried to weave a realistic and complex fabric of social and family ties, full of melancholy, insecurity, dirty tricks and easy money. We tried to understand Ulysse and David’s dreams as they come crashing down, their failed ambitions, their naïve belief that they might one day be able to escape the lives they were born into. After having visited a psychiatric ward, we understood the character of Gabrielle wouldn’t just suffer her illness: she was waging a violent interior war against herself. Ulysse must confront his mother’s illness and to cover her medical bills. His food truck gives him many illusions but L’EnKas is the story of the collapse of this illusion. Little by little, Ulysse sees his project crashing down. He will hold on only enough to keep breathing, until the end. L’EnKas is not a good-versus-evil movie, nor a moralistic movie. I’m drawn to simple people, who fall, get hurt, get back up again, contradict themselves and have their own reasons.
