“The most accomplished of Dreyer’s five sound films (…). The slow pace of the rhythm is placed at the service of a rich and, dramatically speaking, extremely abundant action, long fixed takes drawn out by calm pan shots accompany the movements of the characters, the variations of the light in a closed and restricted space create a hypnotic ritual throughout the film. The purpose of this ritual is to capture the full attention of the viewer making it converge onto the narrow space of the film, considered as the antechamber of the invisible. With infinite detail, reminiscent of that of Vermeer but in a different shade, Dreyer explores a particle of the universe in which faith and scepticism, reason and madness, childhood and old age, obstinacy and unison with the world coexist as they have done since the origin of time”.
