Lifescapes Beyond Bigness
Lifescapes Beyond Bigness, the United Arab Emirates Pavilion’s exhibition at Biennale Architettura 2018, explores the interplay between the physicality of architecture and places, and the dynamic choreography of everyday life. The talk will present the exhibition’s theme, which investigates the role of quotidian landscapes in accommodating, enhancing, and facilitating “everyday” social activities, and invites visitors to experience important human-scale landscapes in the UAE that are often overlooked in common perceptions of the UAE’ mega-development discourse.
The talk will examine a curatorial selection of four urban typologies from the UAE’s diverse landscapes (residential neighborhoods, networks of streets and sikkak, urban blocks and natural landscapes) and present an exploration of their physical characteristics, behavioral rhythms and life, and the urban and architectural design traditions that have shaped them.
