Synopsis
The film is inspired by Arthur Schnitzler’s novella Dream Story, with the events transferred to the setting of New York in the 1990s. The protagonists are Bill Hartford, a doctor, and his wife Alice, a gallerist: a young, well-to-do and apparently happy couple. After a party at which people make passes at both of them, Alice tells her husband of her own erotic fantasies about a man she had met on vacation. Bill is disturbed by this, but a telephone call obliges him to go out to visit the family of a patient who has just died. He then starts to wander around the streets of New York: first he is picked up by a young prostitute, and then meets an old friend who tells him about a mysterious and exclusive gathering in a luxurious country mansion, at which it is obligatory to wear a mask. Intrigued, Bill hires a costume and manages to get into the mansion. Here he witnesses the staging of solemn and disquieting orgiastic rituals, but soon discovers that he is in grave danger.
