Synopsis

Can a living person dream of a ghost’s dreams and assume ghosts can dream? This VR project reveals a forgotten Indochinese refugee camp in Asia and tells a story about a dream within another. The narrative is based on an unknown Vietnamese refugee camp in Penghu, Taipei, and a dream about an unidentified female victim during the Khmer Rouge period. Kim Phuong, the protagonist, was a 13-year-old Vietnamese refugee. In 1978, three years after the Fall/Liberation of Saigon, she fled Vietnam. During her harrowing 2,000 km journey over 66 days, Phuong’s boat became the most well-known among the 51 refugee boats sailing to the forgotten refugee camp in Taipei. She lost her mother, younger brother, and her uncle’s family at sea. Initially, there were 146 people on her boat, but only 34 survived the miserable journey. Phuong and her sister Chi were the last survivors in their family to reach the shore. They spent nearly three years in a refugee camp in Penghu, Taipei, until Belgium accepted them in 1981. In those dreams, an unidentified Cambodian girl reveals the story of Phuong’s family by asking, “Have you ever been there?” But what does she mean by “there”?

Main Creators’ Statement

This story is based on stories of forgotten Indochinese refugee camps that were denied in the UN’s records. Through this project, rebuilding the demolished memories of the forgotten refugee camps in the Taipei Strait, we intend to reveal the hidden Asian history at sea in the West Asia-Pacific region.
