In 1961 Simone Forti presented a programme titled Five Dance Constructions and Some Other Things as part of a conceptual path organized with his friend and composer La Monte Young in Yoko Ono’s loft-studio. These radically new dances created the circumstances for direct, not stylized, actions by the performers. Each piece took place in a different part of the loft, in which the public moved around to attend every moment of the programme. Some pieces required elementary structures – a hanging rope, rectangular wooden boxes – placed within the loft as sculptural installations.
In 2004 the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles invited Forti to recreate these Dance Constructions in the Geffen Contemporary space together with the exhibition A Minimalist Future? Art as Object 1958-1986.
The video of that occasion includes Huddle, Slant Board, Platforms, See Saw, Roller Boxes and Accompaniment for La Monte’s 2 Sounds, remastered. The words of the artists are the bonus of the video.
