Statement by
Alberto Barbera
“To conceive what has been not as a past to forget, but – on the contrary – as something that has yet to be (in the words of the poet) – stated the artistic director of the Venice International Film Festival Alberto Barbera – is not just a commitment aimed at fostering a better understanding of our common cultural roots, but also and above all to provide the tools to address, understand and assess what is yet to come. To shape it, to organise it and in some way to ensure in advance that it has the quality to affect our near future just as those films have helped to shape the awareness and cultural identity we are made of. A well-articulated programme, as usual, that ranges from auteur films in the strictest sense and others that have become part of our collective imagination by virtue of their capacity to build spectacular models that leave their mark on our consciences”.
