The Passing of Ricardo Scofidio

Founder of the U.S.-based architecture firm Diller Scofidio + Renfro. Participant in multiple editions of the Biennale Architettura and in the Biennale Architettura 2025, directed by Carlo Ratti.

A heartfelt goodbye to Ricardo Scofidio

The President, the Artistic Director of the Architecture Sector, the Board of Directors, and the entire La Biennale di Venezia express their heartfelt condolences for the passing of architect Ricardo Scofidio (1935–2025), founder of the internationally renowned firm Diller Scofidio + Renfro.

Together with his wife Liz Diller and architect Charles Renfro, Ricardo Scofidio was responsible for numerous iconic projects in New York, from the Lincoln Center to the celebrated High Line and The Shed, as well as the soon-to-open V&A East Storehouse in London’s Olympic Park.

His firm participated in several editions of the International Architecture Exhibition at the Biennale di Venezia in 2018, 2008, 2004, 2002, 2000, and 1996, as well as in the International Art Exhibition in 2003.

This year, Diller Scofidio + Renfro is taking part in the Biennale Architettura curated by Carlo Ratti (May 10 – November 23, 2025) with a project in the Arsenale aimed at making Venice’s waters a symbol of transformation. Additionally, in collaboration with Brendan Cormier, the firm is designing the Special Project for the Pavilion of Applied Arts at the Sale d’Armi in the Arsenale, a project realized by La Biennale in partnership with the V&A Museum in London.

"Through his extraordinary work, Ricardo Scofidio redefined the boundaries between architecture, art, and technology. He explored new languages and inspired generations of designers worldwide. The curator and the curatorial team stand with Liz Diller and the entire Diller Scofidio + Renfro team in this moment of sorrow." – Carlo Ratti
