Carnival breaks through the fog

1982

Venice in Naples
16 > 26 September 1982

After The confusion of languages (the theme of Carnival 1980) and after The eighteenth century and reason (theme of the Carnival 1981), I would like to bring together “in public” the two mother tongues of our theatre, Venetian and Neapolitan, with an invasion of Venice by Naples so that we can verify, in a different and in any case modified environment, all the new ferment in drama, theatre and entertainment in Naples, very exciting in my opinion, in an incomparable scenic space such as Venice, and a time such as Carnival, when encounters come to mean something more and perhaps more fascinating.
Theatre and piazza (but in Venice piazza also clearly means water) will alternate for six days and six nights to host performances, events, happenings, exhibitions and concerts where theatres will stay open at all hours, following a custom that began with the carnival in 1980.
All of the above thanks to the extraordinary complicity of the mayor of Naples Maurizio Valenzi who agreed to go forward with a subsequent exchange Venice in Naples.
On the other hand, Naples is an often unstable container that expresses an exceptionally intense dramatic vitality, a degree of creativity that is also theatrical, with a spectacular use of its language (here speech is often “theatrical speech”) which in my opinion has no equal in other Italian regions.
