Biennale College Architettura 2024-2025

International Call

The Artistic Director of the 19th International Architecture Exhibition (Biennale Architettura 2025) has invited emerging design practitioners to submit projects that utilize natural, artificial, and collective intelligence to combat the climate crisis.

From this global pool of submissions, up to 16 projects from participants under the age of 30 will be chosen by the Artistic Director  to develop their projects in the Biennale College Architettura programme.

The goals of this endeavour are as follows:
· To complement and enrich the 19th International Architecture Exhibition with newly commissioned works by emerging practitioners, fully supported by La Biennale di Venezia.
· To expand opportunities for young emerging practitioners by sharing their work with a wide audience.
· To present selected works in the context of the 19th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia.

La Biennale di Venezia already achieves these goals by supporting productions by emerging talents in the Departments of Art, Cinema, Dance, Music, Theatre, and the Historical Archive of Contemporary Arts.

Up to 16 applicants will be selected from the open call, and they will subsequently be invited to join a 10-day workshop in Venice in September 2024 (schedule may be subject to change) to develop the proposals - including production and budget planning. A final selection of up to 8 projects will be finally chosen by the Artistic Director for inclusion in the 19th International Architecture Exhibition. The workshop will cover the conception, development, production of specific projects proposed in advance and selected by La Biennale di Venezia.

G. Venice Workshop Activities

Development Workshop and presentation of the projects
The selected participants will attend an intensive workshop, in English, to develop and define their project; it will last 10 days during the month of September 2024 (subject to change).

The workshop will be run by the Artistic Director of the Architecture Department of La Biennale di Venezia and/or a group of curators and architects who will act as tutors and mentors for the group. The workshop will alternate between group and individual sessions and dedicated meetings with visiting instructors and cultural producers.

At the conclusion of the workshop, each participant will present their project.

Final selection
Each participant will be required to deliver, within three weeks of the end of the workshop, a final project draft with an updated budget and production schedule. After listening to the presentation of the projects in September and assessing the final project mentioned above, the Artistic Director will select up to 8 projects from the selected participants. These participants will move on to the production workshop, presented below.

Production Workshop
In January 2025 (subject to change), the participants will attend a set of online meetings during which they will define all aspects of their project and the production process. The goal of this workshop is to prepare the participants of the up to 8 selected projects to proceed with the production of the works once the workshop is concluded.

H. Allocation of the funds for the production and signature of the agreement
At the end of the online meetings, a grant of € 20,000 for the production will be allocated to each selected project.

The Artistic Director of the Architecture Department of La Biennale di Venezia , assisted by La Biennale staff, will approve each project for funding. After that, the financial controller of the Biennale College will approve the budgets and production schedules.

The selected applicants will sign an agreement with La Biennale di Venezia, which defines the obligations of the participants and the terms of their access to the € 20,000 grant.

I. Supervision of the participants
Between the meetings in January 2025 and the end of March 2025, the project development will be monitored and assisted online by the Biennale College team.

J. Presentation at the 19th International Architecture Exhibition
In May 2025, the works will be presented at the Biennale Architettura, out of competition.
A copy of preparatory sketches or videos must be donated to the ASAC (La Biennale di Venezia Historical Archive).

L. Activities to support the non-selected projects

La Biennale di Venezia may further support these projects by facilitating their participation in national and international grant selection.
