synopsis

Left in her aunt’s care on a family ranch at the edge of the burning Brazilian wetland, 12-year-old Mia is desperate for the touch of her mother’s love. Amidst the volatile natural world and the looming threat of a deadly jaguar, love manifests in unexpected ways.

director's statement

Minha Mãe é Uma Vaca is set in Brazil’s Pantanal, a wetland now ravaged by illegal fires, often started to clear land for cattle and crops, worsening the climate crisis. This coming-of-age story follows a young girl navigating life in this place. Inspired by my own childhood, when I lived on a farm after my mother’s life was threatened, the film explores themes of fear, life, and self-discovery. Influenced by traditional and Spaghetti Westerns, it’s my “LatinX Western,” where the wetlands symbolise the unknown, and the journey is about confronting death and the first stirrings of desire.
