La Biennale di Venezia at Expo 2025 Osaka
La Biennale di Venezia comes to Expo 2025 Osaka, the Universal Exposition taking place from April 13th to October 13th on the artificial island of Yumeshima, in the bay of the Japanese city of Osaka, with a presentation of its activities and in particular, with a multi-channel sound installation conceived exclusively for the Italian Pavilion by Caterina Barbieri, the new artistic director of Biennale Musica.
As Pietrangelo Buttafuoco, President of La Biennale di Venezia, affirms: “Musician Caterina Barbieri’s special art is pure grace and elegance. Her presence at the Expo in Osaka bespeaks and vitalizes the energy of a history, the history of La Biennale di Venezia, inexhaustible, powerful and benevolent”.
On Wednesday April 16th, at 2:30 pm, during the week dedicated to the city of Venice, Caterina Barbieri, the composer and director of La Biennale di Venezia’s Music Department, will present Nest of Silence, the multi-channel sound installation conceived specifically for the garden of the Italian Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka.
It is in the Italian-style hanging garden that completes the modern “ideal city” conceived by Mario Cucinella for the Italian Pavilion, featuring sculptures, fountains, plants and a footpath winding through nature and artifice, that Nest of Silence by Caterina Barbieri materialises, to be enjoyed for the next six months. Articulating the theme selected for the exhibition, “Art regenerates life”, the work accompanies visitors through an immersive listening experience, in which synthetic sounds and field recordings progressively blend to reflect the dynamic relationship between the machine and the organic.
The field recordings were selected in conversation with the electroacoustic composer and field recorder Sarah Keirle. The technical design of the installation and its multi-channel arrangement was developed with French sound designer Thierry Coduys. The conceptualisation of the work was developed in collaboration with the Italian multidisciplinary artist Ruben Spini.
