Synopsis
It is the farm on which Thomas was born. It is his family. His brother, who won’t be coming back, his mother, who is about to do the same thing, and his father, with whom nothing has ever been possible. He finds there everything from which he had fled twelve years earlier. But today there is Alex, his six-year-old nephew, and Mona, his passionate mother.
Director’s Statement
How is it possible to be a family when suffering has separated us, and made us insensible to our feelings?
It’s a question that has gripped me deeply. I wanted to set this story against the background of an abandoned rural world, of farms with no livestock, of an empty countryside where at times an immense moral and emotional solitude holds sway.
The family is all of a piece with the farm: a heritage that is still a duty to be cherished and passed down from father to son, from generation to generation. I like to start a film where most other films come to an end. The harshest words and the most vicious lines are exchanged at the beginning of Revenir. From that moment on there seems to be nothing left worth rebuilding. I believe that despair lends grace to joy, that pain heightens tenderness, that regret enhances love. Hope is never so alive as in great dramas.
