synopsis

Child prodigy. Rebellious teenager. Romantic poet, philosopher, political thinker. Giacomo Leopardi was modernity’s first existentialist, a guiding light for the tumultuous years of the Italian Risorgimento, a “cursed” man who abused his art and his genius to the point of annihilation. Through the story of his friend Ranieri, we retrace the poet’s life from childhood to his escape from the oppressive family environment, to the clash with emergent liberal and ecclesiastical thought, through his tormented love for Countess Fanny Targioni Tozzetti and his illness, and on to his death.

director's statement

It is the irrepressible love for life that drives Leopardi and his poetics; and his pessimism is the result of a relentless quest for happiness denied by an incomprehensible universe that is deaf to the desires of men. The poet’s constant yearning for life manifests itself through a desire for freedom, love and beauty, at the cost of questioning every established order, from his family to the conformism of his contemporaries. It is the search for love that pushes Leopardi beyond the gilded fence of his father’s house, and it is the love for a woman, the bewitching aristocrat Fanny Targioni Tozzetti, that becomes his mainspring, going on to take up a considerable portion of his literary production—just as, once again, it is through his love for his loyal and Apollonian friend Ranieri that our poet is able to overcome the limits of his own physicality. Misunderstood by his contemporaries, a visionary genius with the heart of an eternal boy, Leopardi is more interested in addressing future generations, who, to this day, have never stopped listening to his voice.
