Luna Cenere - Vanishing Place

Disappearing to let the body speak. The research by Luna Cenere, born in 1987, looks at the human body as a landscape and to nudity as a necessary condition. With a preference for a choreography that explores adagio as a tempo to emphasise the individual parts of the body and create forms to shape the space of the stage, Luna Cenere privileges the essential and the single unit of gesture. As the choreographer, who trained at the Salzburg Experimental Academy of Dance, explains: “What is the body on stage? I wanted it to become something else, something that was not merely an anthropomorphic body, but collective memory, suggestion for the spectator, an element of the landscape in which everybody sees something. The naked body can also be abstracted, especially when you eliminate the frontal relationship with the spectator. If you eliminate the face, the gender, it is the person that expresses itself”.

Since her first creation, the solo Kokoro (2017), Luna Cenera has drawn inspiration from The Invisible Actor by Yoshi Oida and Lorna Marshall, from the working method of Peter Brook’s longstanding actor, the way he makes the actor “disappear” to make the performance appear. And so Luna Cenere comes to Biennale Danza with Vanishing Place, a work about revealing and concealing.

Co-produced by La Biennale di Venezia, as the winner of the national call for a new choreography, with Körper – Centro di produzione Nazionale della Danza, Teatro di Napoli – Teatro Nazionale, Vanishing Place will involve five performers – Ilaria Quaglia, Marina Bertoni, Francesca La Stella, Luca Zanni, and Davide Tagliavini – accompanied by the music of the composer and electro-acoustic musician Renato Grieco.
