International call

Biennale College Arte
2023/2024

Goals:

  • To complement and enrich the 60th International Art Exhibition (Biennale Arte 2024) with newly commissioned artworks by emerging artists, fully supported by La Biennale di Venezia.
  • 12 artistic projects of young emerging artists under 30 from all over the world will be chosen out of an open call to develop further their projects in a series of workshops focused on training, research and experimentation. The workshop will cover the conception, development, production of specific projects proposed in advance and selected by La Biennale di Venezia.
  • To expand opportunities for young emerging artists to show their work to a wide audience.

Other goals include:

  • To present the selected artistic works in the context of the 60th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia.

The programme implies the selection and development of up to 12 projects and, in a second phase, the production of up to 4 artworks to be presented, out of competition, during the 60th International Art Exhibition.

The selection will be made by the Artistic Director of the Art Department of La Biennale di Venezia, whose decision will be final.

The programme includes workshops which will focus on the development of the proposals, on production and budget development.

La Biennale di Venezia already achieves these goals by supporting productions by young emerging artists in the Departments of Architecture, Cinema, Dance, Music and Theatre and the Historical Archives of Contemporary Arts.

Programme description

A. Participants
The Artistic Director of the Art Department of La Biennale di Venezia will select up to 12 proposals presented by emerging artists under the age of 30.

On September 15th La Biennale di Venezia will announce the 12 projects of the selected artists for the first phase and invited to attend the 10 days development workshop in October in Venice.

D. Rules of participation
Following the announcement, the selected artists will sign an agreement with La Biennale di Venezia, which will detail the conditions of their participation. All the activities will be held in English.

E. Conditions of hospitality
Artists selected for the workshop and subsequently those accessing the second phase for the production grant will be hosted (lodging and meals) for the duration of their stay in Venice (11 nights, in October 22nd out November 2nd) in selected structures provided by La Biennale di Venezia.

La Biennale di Venezia will also cover the participants travel expenses in economy class for the October workshop in Venice.
Each artist may bring a collaborator during the workshops but all the costs for travel, room and board will be at his/her own expense.

F. Venice Workshop Activities
Development Workshop and presentation of the projects to the Artistic Director of the Art Department
The selected artists will attend an intensive workshop, in English, to develop and define their project; it will last 10 days from 23rd October to 1st November (travel dates: 22th October and 2nd November).

The workshop will be run by the Director of the Art Department and a group of curators and artists who will act as tutors and mentors for the group. The workshop will alternate between group and individual sessions as well as dedicated meetings with visiting professors and cultural producers.

At the conclusion of the first workshop each artist will present their projects to the Artistic Director of the Art Department of La Biennale di Venezia.

Final selection
The artists will be required to deliver, within three weeks of the end of the workshop, a final project draft with updated budget and production schedule. The Director of the Art Department, after listening to the presentation of the projects in October and assessing the final project mentioned above, will select up to four projects of the selected artists. These artists will move on to the production workshop, presented below.

Production Workshop
In December 2023 (from 18th to 21st) the artists will attend 4 days online meetings on production during which they will define all aspects of their project and of the production process. The goal of this workshop is to prepare the artists of four selected projects, once the workshop is concluded, to proceed with the production and transport of the works.

G. Allocation of the funds for the production and signature of the agreement.
At the end of the online meetrings, a grant of € 25,000 will be allocated to each of the selected projects.
The Artistic Director of the Art Department, assisted by La Biennale’s staff, will approve each project for funding, and after the financial controller of the Biennale College will approve the budgets and production schedules.

The selected artists will sign an agreement with La Biennale di Venezia which defines the obligations of the artist and terms to access the € 25,000 grant.

H. Supervision of the artists
Between January and end of March the artists project development will be monitored, assisted online by the Biennale College team.

I. Presentation at the 60th International Art Exhibition

The artists participating in the October workshop but who are not selected to access the production grant will receive feedback from the Artistic Director of the Art Department.
La Biennale di Venezia may further support these projects by facilitating their participation for the selection in national and international grants.

La Biennale di Venezia reserves the right in any case to modify, cancel or interrupt the initiative described above, in that the announcement or the selection do not constitute a binding contract for the same, nor do they entail the right to the reimbursement of any expense other than those specified above.
