D’argent et de sang (Of money and blood) (Episodes 1-12)

The story of the scam of the century, in 2009. Billions are going up in smoke on the new “carbon quotas” market, invented to fight pollution. A gang of small-time crooks from Belleville partner with an upper-class trader to carry off an epic swindle. This is what happens when “casino capitalism” collides head-on with politics. When human passions going far beyond simple greed are unleashed.

I wanted to mix the thriller genre with a study of morals, an environmental questioning, and a spiritual journey. A fresco that crosses social classes from high society to small crooks, from Wall Street to casinos in Manila. There is a fascinating energy flowing through the pieces of this puzzle. Decadence and gambling are brilliant cinematographic materials, but I wanted to cast a shadow over these: an obsessional investigator in search for truth. The camera evolves somewhere between an aesthetic fascination with evil and a concern to stand up for society. I wanted to picture a state of the world and its contradictions, avoiding voyeuristic complicity or moral simplicity.
