The Latin saying “Nemo propheta in patria” signifies the challenge of gaining recognition in one’s birthplace. Conversely, recognition is more likely to occur elsewhere, among strangers. In this context, a prophet is someone often standing out for their ability to perceive beyond conventional norms. Art has consistently played a role in breaking down barriers, disseminating ideas across social and geographical boundaries. The saying encapsulates a universal truth about the difficulties innovators face in their native environment.
In a Biennale dedicated to foreigners and their diasporas, the Cameroon Pavilion will showcase Cameroonian and international artists, highlighting their work outside their native contexts in a broader vision project. The initiative celebrates those who have left their communities in pursuit of work, attention, and success elsewhere — a phenomenon witnessed across eras and nations.
The Cameroon Pavilion, aptly named the “pavilion of wonders”, will feature projects by local and international artists, commemorating the courage of those who pursued their ideas independently of local recognition, aspiring to an ambitious international horizon. It will be a space where differences are embraced as a source of richness, fostering an inclusive environment where no one feels like an outsider.
