Strangeways

Strangeways floats and flows beyond our own strangled world. It’s where corridors twist into gardens, and fingers scribble sketches of dreams. Creatures, plants, earth, junk (and the stuff in the gaps between them) all converse and share wild thoughts. Come inside and explore the strange ways together. Strangeways is a hand-drawn immersive VR world looking at the garden of humanity’s creations from the detritus of our dreams to the junkyards of absurdity and our collective myths. Once in the void, a stone spoke “How many things are there?”. A leaf thought “There can be as many things as you want there to be” “Where will I find them?” Blinked the eye.

Strangeways was born out of a desire to shake up our understanding of what immersive experiences can be. Through a chance meeting with the illustrator Chris Bianchi and his openness to exploring immersive worlds with his work the project was born. We chose to move away from using 3D modelled assets as the starting point of our immersive world, instead we worked with 2D images drawn with pen and ink on paper and brought them straight into the 3D environment. The project sees the playful exploration between 2D to 3D, black & white to colour and a mashup of photogrammetry, collage, photography and AI. The music and sound are critical to building a magical realist cinematic experience that can be lived by the viewer.
