Thierry Miroglio percussion recital

This recital brings together percussion, electronics, visual and digital arts and represents a journey across the music of Asia today, as well as a bridge between East and West, between tradition and modernity. Pulsing tempos, extended and contracted in space, are Ichiro Nodaira’s focus; his use of instruments and electronics, the subdivisions and layering in real time evoke the image of Pierre Boulez in the background. In his piece, José Miguel Fernández connects East and West in a sometimes meditative, sometimes frenetic ritual voyage in which the gestures of the performer are captured and transformed in real time to modulate the sound of the percussion. Shuya Xu and Xiaofu Zhang draw on aspects of the nature and culture of their native land. The former translates the colour contrasts of a winter landscape by associating the warm sounds of the wood in the marimba with the metal of the cymbals and crotales. The latter transcribes the sounds and visual impressions of his travels to Tibet: intense and powerful music supported by electronics and by video images as brightly coloured and impressive as the richness of Tibet’s spirituality and culture.
