A Roof for Silence evokes the theme of living together through the notion of emptiness as a temporal and spatial condition of architecture. By setting up a dialogue between several different eras and disciplines, and by offering the vision of a set of sixteen olive trees thousands of years old that stand in Lebanon, the project speaks to the need for emptiness and reminds us of the kind of life that can inhabit that emptiness as a form of silence. The installation is introduced by the ‘anti-form’ paintings of Paul Virilio, which resonate with photogrammetric and sound recordings taken from inside the olive trees. The project hinges on a work by the poet and artist Etel Adnan – Hommage à la déesse de l’olivier. These sixteen tondi made up of blanks and spaces between the words–colours–shapes that bathe them in light.
Image 1 – How will we live together?
A Roof for Silence is designed and curated by architect Hala Wardé, in a privileged collaboration with poet and artist Etel Adnan.
The project evokes the theme of living together, as observed in the trunks of 16 millennial olive trees, by questioning the notion of emptiness as a temporal and spatial condition of architecture, as well as of poetry, painting and music.

Photogrammetric surveys, developed as life-sized tracings of the millennial tree’s hollows, engender an iterative geometry of forms and spaces. This leads to a central architectural piece housing the artwork, creating a space of emotion and silence.
This score, of perfectly rigorous geometry, evolves in function of its context by varying its rhythm and its intervals.
