The coming-of-age comedy of the chambermaid Lian in a hotel that is inhabited by transsexuals and transvestites in Singapore during the Vietnam War. How she discovers a totally different life and love in a street full of darkness, of divine decadence and the sexes, of sailors and the rickshaw glamour, of mascara virtue. A fantasy land all her own.
My intention was to make a movie about love and freedom, but I could never have imagined all the strange spices of lust, seduction, repulsion, indulgence, intoxication, infidelity, and intolerance come in with it, all the seven deadly sins. Then comes a certain kind of tenderness, friendliness, innocence and after all, some dignity from the back alleys. My intention was not to make a dangerous movie from the South Sea, but that’s what it is.
