Description

A fighter with superhuman punk hair, an androgynous mutant in flight, a muscular alien bolt of lightning, a hyper-creature vaulting into her unmistakable barrel jumps, red-hot horizontal pirouettes, a demigod of frenetic virtuosity: that is how Louise Lecavalier (Montréal, 1958) seduced rock and dance fans alike, acrobatically dominating the stage with her sincere and boundless hunger for energy, projecting her powerful and mysterious image as a dark enigmatic Muse, wearing a corset, smoke-grey stockings and black running shoes, at the centre of Edouard Lock’s La La La Human Steps, the group that rocketed to fame in the 1980s, memorable yet closed. Louise’s duet with David Bowie, inspired by her athletic spirit, remains a milestone of that era. After leaving La La La in 1999, the magnificent dancer-Amazon trained in boxing and yoga before reinventing herself. She cut her famous platinum dreadlocks, and reshaped her charismatic warrior physical essence, modulating its nuances but without giving up its flames of ardent ice and mercurial rhythm. Yesterday like today, she challenges and breaks through every boundary in the audacity of her authentic, direct and honest movement.
The duo So Blue to the music of Turkish-Canadian artist Mercan Dede with the costumes of Yso (Siphay Southidara), which made its debut in Düsseldorf in 2012 and which she now brings back to the Biennale, was her first complete intense choreography. So Blue is a vortex of altered states of constant dynamic instability, expressed with the fiery extremism of determination and a supreme domination of her wonderful and permanent artistic stamina. “I am all colours but above all I am blue”, she says of herself, Divine without being a Diva.
