Biennale Teatro
From May 31st to June 15th, 2025, plays, mise en lecture, screenings, encounters, workshops and masterclasses will be held in the theatres and outdoor spaces of Venice and Marghera. This is the 53rd International Theatre Festival titled Theatre is Body – Body is Poetry, headed by the new director Willem Dafoe. The Festival, which places the body of the actor at the centre of creation in theatre, will offer a broad overview of the American and European experimental scene, the very theatre in which Dafoe was formed and to which he has always returned, seeking its legacy in new theatre together with the emerging generations.

The many names in the programme include The Wooster Group, the historic American company founded and still directed today by Elizabeth LeCompte, the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement, which will bring to the stage the European premiere of Symphony of Rats; Thomas Richards, who has worked for over thirty years with Workcenter Grotowski, presents the European premiere of The Inanna Project under the banner of the multiculturalism of his company Theatre no Theatre; Eugenio Barba and Julia Varley, of the legendary Odin Teatret, question the emotional legacy we leave our children in Le Nuvole di Amleto; American poet Bob Holman, heir to the great chapter of the Beat Generation, the protagonist of the street performance We are the Dinosaur, and of a lecture titled Talking Poetry / More Than Heart II in collaboration with the Industria Indipendente collective; the American director, actor and author Anthony Nikolchev with the world premiere of The (Un) Double, inspired by Dostoyevsky’s The Double. Dafoe himself, together with Simonetta Solder, will pay tribute to Richard Foreman, the pioneer of the American artistic and intellectual avant-garde, with the original “performative experiment” No title.

Romeo Castellucci presents the world premiere of I mangiatori di patate, a new site-specific creation for the Island of Lazzaretto Vecchio. Also, a world premiere:  Call me Paris by the German author and director Yana Eva Thönnes and Mountains by the choreographers and directors Evangelia and Mary Rantou. And again: the new play by Milo Rau, Die Seherin (The Seer), featuring the actress and Silver Lion Ursina Lardi, in Venice just a few days before its debut in Vienna; Changes by Thomas Ostermeier; Pinocchio. Che cos’è una persona?, in which Davide Iodice works with young people with forms of neurodivergence. And furthermore: Gardi Hutter, the extraordinary clown, appreciated and acclaimed the world over with Giovanna D’ArpPo and the important participation of the Istanbul Historical Turkish Music Ensemble. Finally, the concert by an extraordinary musician, Daniela Pes.
